Bellwood Elementary was the first to go to a year-round schedule at the beginning of this school year. Students still get 180 days of instruction, but take 3-4 week breaks in between. Advocates say year-round school helps prevent summer learning loss and burnout for students and teachers. The district says about 80% of parents surveyed said they’d send their kids to year-round school at Falling Creek. But school board member John Erbach says some parents have mixed feelings about the proposed calendar. “But once they learn about it. I think most people realize that from a lifestyle perspective, they will be able to make an adjustment.” Both Falling Creek and Bellwood are Title 1 Schools that receive federal funding to help meet educational goals of their large populations of low-income students. The school board will vote on the proposal on February 12. After that it needs to be approved by the State Board of Education. If approved, the school is planning several parent and staff meetings between March and June. Then it would open in Fall 2019.
