Richmond City Councilwoman Kim Gray isn’t backing off from her call to investigate Mayor Levar Stoney’s handling of a $1.8 million contract.
Gray previously requested that Commonwealth’s Attorney Colette McEachin look into the contract to remove 14 Confederate statues and symbols, which was awarded to one of Stoney’s campaign donors. McEachin responded to the letter last week, saying she would not investigate because that same donor, Devon Henry, also gave to her husband’s campaign in 2011. McEachin also said an investigation will need to be requested by the governor or attorney general.
Gray fired back in a letter sent Wednesday afternoon, asking McEachin to get the Attorney General’s Office involved.
“...Leaving unresolved the questions that have been raised about the contract…serves to undermine public trust and confidence,” Gray wrote. “The citizens of Richmond are entitled to answers and deserve a fair and impartial review of the facts of this matter.”
Gray, who is running for mayor against Stoney this fall, said McEachin should recuse herself and appoint a special prosecutor to investigate or request an investigation by the Virginia Attorney General.
