At three precincts in Chesterfield County, voters headed to the polls under autumn temperatures to cast ballots for issues they’d like to see a new governor and delegates take on.
VPM reporter Ian Stewart and photojournalist Crixell Matthews crisscrossed parts of Chesterfield County Tuesday - Election Day - to see what was on voter’s minds.
Laverne Charity
“Voting rights, medication, education and the mandate for these vaccinations. I think people need to be vaccinated because nobody wants Covid. Nobody wants to have a family member to die from Covid and I want Covid to go away.”
Ricky Clay
“Basically, I just wanted to do my civic duty. I vote every year,” Issues he’d like to see: “Basically to create more jobs and getting the schools corrected and stop the violence in these schools and neighborhoods.”

“Lower taxes. Getting rid of taxes on food...interest in the schools. I used to teach, so parents input, super important.”
Pamela Redd
“Well I teach, so course education is important. We need an increase. Because we wouldn’t have all the other careers without teachers, so why are we the least paid? And with Covid, it’s important that people understand that we need to wear masks in school because we have teachers that are dying and we have kids that are dying.”

It was Keanna White’s first time voting.
“I was kind of excited. It’s my first time doing it, so I just wanted to give back.”

“Number one, the economy. Got a haircut about three weeks ago, cost me $16. Got a haircut two days ago, cost me $20, gas prices, inflation. And education is a big issue. I got two grandkids, five and six, and I don’t want them to be growing up in an education system that doesn’t teach basic education.”
