The Virginia State Bar suspended the law license of Dinwiddie County’s prosecutor, Ann Cabell Baskervill, late last week as she recovers from an injury.
“Effective July 6, 2022, the Virginia State Bar Disciplinary Board suspended Ann Cabell Baskervill’s license to practice law on impairment grounds,” said a notice from the bar sent Friday and first reported by VPM News. Baskervill has served as Dinwiddie's Commonwealth’s Attorney since 2014.
Calls to the Dinwiddie attorney’s office by VPM News have not been returned.
Baskervill served as Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for Hopewell during 2006, and between 2006 and 2013, she held the same position in Richmond.
In a letter from Baskervill’s attorney sent to the Richmond Times-Dispatch and shared with VPM News, Baskervill further explains the bar’s notice, saying that she suffered a traumatic brain injury in April. The move to temporarily step away from her position comes, the letter said, after consulting with “ER doctors and my treating doctor.”
The time away from the prosecutor’s post was said to provide for Baskervill’s recovery.
Colonial Heights Senior Commonwealth’s Attorney Erin Barr was sworn into the post July 1, according to the Times-Dispatch, and will be overseeing Baskervill’s duties. Henrico County and Colonial Heights law staff are set to provide assistance.
“I look forward to returning after my treatment to continue to be of public service," Baskervill wrote at the close of her letter.
