Laura K. Drewry was appointed Richmond's new city attorney on Monday.

Laura K. Drewry will serve as the city’s chief legal adviser.

Richmond City Council appointed Laura K. Drewry as the new city attorney on Monday. She is the first woman to hold the position.

“And to work with this majority-woman council, that’s the true inspiration,” Drewry said Monday.

Drewry has worked with the city since 2006, most recently as deputy city attorney in the Civil Litigation Division. She primarily worked in worker’s compensation and employment litigation, according to the city’s website.

Haskell C. Brown III, Richmond’s previous city attorney, resigned last month after being arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

As city attorney, Drewry will serve as the city’s chief legal adviser, according to a City Council press release. She’ll also oversee the Richmond Office of City Attorney, which provides legal representation to entities across Richmond's government.
