The past week has been all about the election at VPM News. National eyes were on the presidential race Tuesday, but there were other races being contested all over the commonwealth.
At the federal level, VPM News reporter Jahd Khalil and WAMU’s Margaret Barthel covered Sen. Tim Kaine’s re-election win over Republican challenger Hung Cao. You can also watch Kaine’s victory speech from his election night party at the Hippodrome Theater in Richmond’s Jackson Ward.
We have unofficial results from all 11 of Virginia’s U.S. House districts, including in-depth reports from state Sen. John McGuire’s win in the 5th Congressional District and Eugene Vindman’s victory in the 7th.
VPM News reporter Megan Pauly also reported on a state constitutional amendment that is set to expand property tax exemptions for the surviving spouses of Virginians killed while serving in the military.
VPM News also went deep on local races in Richmond:
- Mayor-elect Dr. Danny Avula held a joint press conference Wednesday with Mayor Levar Stoney to discuss the transition.
- Local political and legal experts explained why money wasn’t the deciding factor in the mayoral race.
- Ballot issues at the Gilpin Court polling place led to the precinct captain being fired.
- And the new City Council is going to look a lot like the old city council, with six incumbents retaining their seats.
