Jonathan Rosen's new book, The Life of the Skies: Birding at the End of Nature, is a meditation upon the history of bird-watching — and the future of the natural world.
Picking up binoculars and peering at the birds, says Rosen, leads us back to the essence of humanity.
"Birds, for me, very much are these mediating elements between earth and sky, between us and the wild world, between memory, even, and forgetting," explains Rosen. "The essence of bird-watching, for me, is the desire for more life."
Rosen has written for The New Yorker and The New York Times, and has published books and novels covering such topics as the Internet, faith, Jewish life and family.
