VPM is proud to be a co-producer of The Great American Recipe and filming it in Virginia is a perfect place to celebrate diversity of cultures through the lens of food. VPM will feature local chefs cooking their favorite culture-inspired recipes at local markets across Virginia. Join us at a festival listed below and explore the variety of flavors and cultures that inspired the chefs’ iconic dishes.

Jen Naylor’s introduction to American food at age 14 was not an auspicious start. Her father, who had brought her mother and three siblings to the United States from their native South Korea for a new life, took the whole family out for fast-food hamburgers.

Many chefs will tell you about a childhood spent learning in their mother’s kitchen, but Antwon Brinson’s mom had her hands full with other concerns.

Some of the chef’s earliest memories are of that Chesterfield County restaurant’s kitchen, where he was often found standing on a milk crate, working the wok when he was 7 years old.

He’s been blowing minds around Harrisonburg since 2013, when he opened a food truck to offer Korean-inspired dishes like steamed buns, quick-pickled kimchi and bulgogi. Six years later, he opened a brick-and-mortar space in downtown Harrisonburg. Both go by the same name: Mashita, which is Korean for “delicious.”
About The Great American Recipe
An uplifting cooking competition that celebrates the multiculturalism that makes American food unique and iconic. Hosted by Alejandra Ramos, and featuring judges Leah Cohen, Tiffany Derry and Graham Elliot, the series will give talented home cooks from different regions of the country the opportunity to showcase their beloved signature dishes and compete to win the national search for “The Great American Recipe”.
From family favorites passed down through generations, to internationally influenced recipes that are quickly becoming mainstays of American cuisine, the series mixes camaraderie with competition, revealing rich personal stories and the inspiration behind the contestant’s favorite recipes. The winning dish will grace the cover of The Great American Cookbook, which will also feature recipes from all the contestants and the show’s host and judges.
