Special Olympics Virginia
Find out how volunteer health professionals address the needs of a marginalized population at the Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games. Every year, several dentists and health-care practitioners in eye-care, hearing, fitness and dental care donate their time and services by diagnosing and even treating many athletes at the Summer Games held in Richmond. They offer care that otherwise would not be given as many of these individuals don’t have health insurance and aren’t aware they need care - often they just live with dental pain or poor eye-sight. It’s an uplifting story of doctors, athletes, coaches and families coming together.
Urban Gardeners
Ginter Urban Gardeners is a 12 week program that helps communities in urban environments learn how to build and maintain community green spaces and gardens. It’s more about addressing the food desert issue, it’s about bringing community members together & working together, having pride in their neighborhoods and learning important skills like project development, volunteer coordination and healthier eating. If the community builds the green space, that green space is more likely to thrive for years and years.
Airstream Ralley
We visit Doswell to see how thousands of Airstream enthusiasts celebrate the “silver bullet” camper at an international rally. This iconic recreational vehicle is part of Americana and has a very dedicated group of people who travel in them. It is a tight-knit community with many of the people developing strong friendships on the road, simply because they all enjoy the look of the camper and the freedom it represents. This is the first time the international rally has ever been held in Virginia.
Jamestown Beach Event Park
Virginia Currents goes to James City County for some fun in the sun at the Jamestown Beach Event Park. This hidden gem is designed for those who want the best of both worlds, like sandcastles and water activities on the beach or sitting in the shade and grilling hot dogs at the park. Each year Jamestown Beach holds a summer concert series called “Jamestown Jams”. This event brings out hundreds to thousands of people from the community and features food, games and a different musical act every weekend. Local 80’s cover band “The Deloreans” rock the stage and move the crowd to the beat!
