Silent Reading Party
Virginia Currents goes inside a Silent Reading Party at one Henrico County school. Introverts can spend time with a good book and make new friends without ever saying a word. The school system started organizing them to promote literacy and camaraderie among students who wouldn’t normally socialize to help them find common ground. They come together to be in the company of others but don’t have the pressure to make small talk.

Mama J’s
Mama J’s in Historic Jackson Ward is serving up mouth-watering dishes in a welcoming atmosphere that’s impossible to resist. Velma Johnson also loving known as “Mama J” has a heart of gold and greets everyone with open arms. Her comforting “soul food” dishes bring all walks of life through the door and if you don’t come early, you’ll have to wait to get a seat. Mama J shares with us how she went from small time catering to feeding well- known celebrities. Her son Lester also shines light on how he and Mama J feel connected to the community and their future plans that will hopefully continue to help the area grow.
