Distance Learning: Tips From a Teacher

Ms. Emily walks with her pre-school students.

The following is a VPM Blog post by Emily Hicks.

Hello friends! My name is Emily Hicks — or Ms. Emily as my students know me. I am a preschool teacher in Henrico, Virginia. I want my students to have the opportunity to continue learning while away from school but, more importantly, I want them to have fun. During COVID-19, here are some ideas on how you can keep your kids busy, keep exploring, and stay positive.

Hygiene Made Fu n

Good personal hygiene is always important, but it’s especially important now to help kids develop good habits. These easy and fun experiments are engaging and informative.

Math Activities

Math may look different for littles than it does for older children or adults, but it is just as important. These activities will help your young ones continue learning at home.

Science Activities

These experiments may seem simple to us as adults, but they can be thrilling and informative experiences for young children. You may learn something new, too!

Sensory Boxes and Bottles

It's easy to make your own sensory box at home. All you need is a plastic bin and some items you already have around the house and you’re ready for hours of fun!

Art Activities

Art is so important for small children. Making art helps littles hone skills they are already working on, like fine motor skills, in a low-stress environment.

Media Recommendations

These are strange times and sometimes everyone just needs a break. Here are a few of my favorite books and TV shows to enjoy with tiny humans, and some other resources to help you keep them entertained.
