Freedom's Fortress

Join the team at New American History for a series of virtual field trips exploring the history of Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia. It’s a remarkable place: it’s the spot where slavery began in British North America in 1619, and the site where it began to unravel during the Civil War. Using clips from the VPM series "The Future of America's Past,", Ms. Evans offers social studies lessons that engage students with big questions about how we remember our past. Developed for students in grades 4-7 and correlated to Virginia SOLS.

Freedom's Fortress airs on Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. on VPM Plus July 6-August 4.

Produced and directed by Hannah Ayers and Lance Warren of Field Studio, featuring Annie Evans, Director of Education and Outreach at New American History.
