Claudia Robles, teacher and owner of Bilingualkid Language Immersion School in Glen Allen, Virginia, will be serving as a panelist for the August 18 PBS KIDS webinar, “Prepping for a Very Different School Year: Strategies for Parents.”

The conversation will focus on tough questions parents and educators are wrestling with heading into the 2020-2021 school year: What will it look like if/when children are physically in school? And what will it mean for family life if/when children are at home for hybrid or remote learning?

“I am excited to participate in anything related to PBS,” said Robles as she prepared for a planning meeting with PBS KIDS. “It’s important to let parents know that just by talking to children and using everyday life skills such as visits to the grocery store or conversations over breakfast, learning can continue outside of the classroom. Setting up a routine, for example, helps to strengthen social-emotional development and provides an opportunity to talk about time and math. Studying shadows on a walk teaches time and science. You can always follow up the lessons by reading books about these subjects.”

Nominated by Mary Jo Grieve, VPM Director of Education, Robles was one of 10 educators across the country chosen as a PBS Early Learning Champion in 2019 (350 stations were invited to participate in the nomination process). Established in 2018, this awards program recognizes committed educators who work with young children, from infants to second graders, and offers a variety of community building, leadership and professional learning opportunities provided by VPM and PBS KIDS.

Grieve is “thrilled and honored that PBS has asked Claudia Robles, our Early Learning Champion, to be a part of this impressive group of panelists to discuss with parents and caregivers the return to a very different back-to-school year. I know from working closely with Claudia on different initiatives that she is passionate and committed to educating children and families. She regularly incorporates the PBS KIDS and PBS for Parents resources into her work and connects this content to her families in person and now virtually. She truly brings these resources to life.”

When COVID-19 hit, Robles successfully continued teaching her students (ages 3-7) online. “As an educator and a mother of three in grades 10, 6 and Pre-K, I’m really looking forward to sharing my ideas and experiences at the webinar.”

Robles will be joined on the panel by Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, Surgeon General of California and Pediatrician; Chris Loggins, Senior Producer at Fred Rogers Productions and part of the creative team behind Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood; and Deborah Farmer Kris, Child Development Expert and Parent Educator.

The webinar will take place from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. ET on the PBS KIDS for Parents YouTube channel.
