What kind of world do you want? A world filled with vibrant music and dancing in the streets? A world filled with meaningful stories and blooming gardens? A world of images reflecting who we are and who we can become? This week explore all the ways that you can participate in creating the world you want to see.


1. RHYTHM ON THE RIVER '21

Rhythm on the River is a celebration of the arts, both performance and visual to be offered at the Sculpture Garden at Virginia Museum Of Fine Arts. 2. GALLERY 5 FIRST FRIDAYS

Theodore Davis, organist kicks off Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church’s August Musicales Concert Series with Impromptu, Op. 78, No. 1; Samuel Coleridge Taylor Lied (from 24 Pièces en style libre); Louis Vierne Suite No. 1 for Organ; Florence Price Peter and the Wolf (1936); and Sergei Prokofiev. John Harris will narrate. No registration required.

Ever dreamed of publishing your own book? bbgb gathered an amazing group of local independent and self-published children's book authors to chat about their passions for writing, their experience with the self-publishing process, and their unique, inspiring journeys to get their words out into the world. This in-person event is free to attend – please wear a mask. If you can’t come in the shop, don’t fret! They will livestream the event on crowdcast, just make sure you’re registered.

7. EXPERIENTIAL LECTURES FROM EXODUS: SCHOOL OF EXPRESSION

This summer, six Richmond-based artists participated in  Exodus: School of Expression’s Seed Summer Residency. Artists-in-residence participated in artist-led workshops centered on Afro-futurism, internal archives, speculative practices, sonics, and visual languages. Join the Institute for Contemporary Art for a culminating salon that centers around the premise of eco-systems in relation to community. Works, process materials, and individual practices will be shared through presentation and discussion. Capacity is limited, so please register for this free event.


8. CHILLIN' AT UNITY: HYMNS AND HEARTSONGS

Unity Church of Bon Air brings Dr. Theresa Steward to use music to soothe, heal, comfort, encourage, and uplift. This program tells a story of spiritual music that has provided peace and solace, comfort and care, joy and gratitude over the last year and a half in the lives of the faith community of Grace Baptist Church in Richmond and beyond. Some are soothing arrangements of beloved hymn tunes, and others are heartsongs or familiar pieces that provide peace or a burst of joy in much needed moments in our lives. No registration required – just show up!


9. KADENCIA

City of Richmond’s Festival of the Arts brings the Latin styles of Kadencia to Dogwood Dell. Come out for a night full of Salsa, Bomba, and Plena. Bring a lawn chair, some blankets, and a picnic dinner to enjoy live music and dance. This event is free, family-friendly, and open to the community.


10. ARTISTIC VARIATIONS

The Chester Artists Association, known for their creativity, offers Artistic Variations at Uptown Gallery. Their risk-taking work inspires the viewer. Opening reception on First Fridays, exhibit runs through August.

Celebrate Virginia Craft Beer Month with the Virginia Museum of History & Culture as it hosts the fourth annual BrewHaHa craft beer festival. This year’s event will feature beer selections from a wide variety of Virginia breweries from across the commonwealth, live music, and food trucks. Free admission to the museum with ticket purchase.
