VPM, Virginia’s home for public media, announced the launch of  VPM NEWS FOCAL POINT, a weekly primetime television news show debuting in early 2022.

Hosted by award-winning journalist and veteran television anchor Angie Miles, the show will frame statewide news through a lens of in-depth reporting on the week’s top issues, offering contextualized coverage of social and environmental issues, politics, business and the economy, race and identity, health, the arts and culture.

VPM NEWS FOCAL POINT is set to build upon VPM’s reputation as a trusted source of news and public affairs reporting that includes VPM’s award-winning local radio news coverage and national reporting from PBS and NPR. Virginia is a nexus of national issues, such as the fight for racial justice, economic growth juxtaposed with entrenched poverty, polarizing politics, climate change and rapidly evolving demographics. VPM NEWS FOCAL POINT aims to emphasize where these issues intersect and provide perspective on how our communities are handling them.

“I am honored to join this team of professionals, dedicated to sharing news that matters to Virginians, especially stories from communities that have had less representation in the media,” said Miles. “As a longtime fan of PBS, I know that the mission of connecting our state through meaningful storytelling is wisely entrusted to VPM, and I am excited about what we are poised to deliver – through listening, learning, educating and being of service to all Virginians.”

Miles’ career spans decades providing leadership for broadcasts at WTVR CBS 6 and WWBT NBC12 in Richmond, and her work has aired on national and local outlets throughout the country. She is also a literacy educator and founder of a literacy nonprofit called HAPPY Reading. Miles taught broadcast news at Virginia Commonwealth University and served as an expert educator and family advocate on numerous state boards. She is a native of Powhatan, Va., and holds two degrees from the University of Virginia, a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and a Master of Education.

Through nuanced coverage of issues,  VPM NEWS FOCAL POINT will uncover stories that have historically been underreported, to inspire a deeper understanding of Virginia and Virginians. The program will highlight community-focused issues from cities, small towns and rural areas across the commonwealth, amplifying voices and views from the heart of the state’s diverse communities.

“VPM plays an essential role in strengthening the democratic fabric of our Commonwealth with trusted, fact-based journalism,” said Jayme Swain, President & CEO of VPM and the Virginia Foundation for Public Media. “Launching  VPM NEWS FOCAL POINT adds a television broadcast to our robust multiplatform news offerings, and I believe it will be must-watch viewing for Virginians looking for context on the issues facing our communities.”
