We are seeking a forward-thinking, detail-oriented Controller to lead our financial operations with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, and strategic decision support. This role is responsible for optimizing our financial processes, enhancing controls and compliance, modernizing systems, and providing clear, actionable financial insights to leadership. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this position is for someone who thrives in a mission-focused environment. The Controller supervises our accounting team and is responsible for the accounting and financial reporting functions for VPM and its subsidiaries. This position establishes and ensures compliance with appropriate accounting and financial policies, procedures, and practices, and safeguards VPM’s assets.

Responsibilities
- Manages Accounting staff through training, coaching, mentoring, direction and oversight, including annual performance evaluations.
- Assists Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in developing, documenting, and ensuring compliance with appropriate accounting policies, procedures, controls and practices.
- Partners with CFO and organizational leadership to develop multi-year budgets, forecasts, and scenario analyses aligned with organizational strategy.
- Streamlines financial workflows to reduce manual work, improve data accuracy, and accelerate reporting cycles.
- Provides monthly Statement of Activities, Statement of Financial Position, Cash Flow Statement and budget versus actual reports, and assists CFO in presenting financial reports to VPM’s committees and boards.
- Lead the adoption and integration of financial technologies to improve automation, accuracy and real-time reporting.
- Compiles daily and monthly internal management reports.
- Oversees cash management and forecasting.
- Reviews income monthly to ensure that it is coded appropriately in accordance with appropriate accounting principles (GAAP, FASB, GASB, et. al).
- Prepares monthly federal and state financial reports.
- Provides posting approvals.
- Work with external auditors to provide data for annual audits.
- Reviews draft IRS Form 1099 at calendar year end and approves.
- Assists in preparing VPM’s and Foundation’s annual IRS Form 990.
- Responsible for VPM and Foundation’s investment data entry and gain/loss calculations.
- Reviews and ensure timely filing of prepared Annual Financial Report (AFR) and Station Activity Benchmarking Study (SABS) reports with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
- Provides excellent vendor and staff support in a timely manner.
- Stays current on regulations, trends, best practices and incorporates them into organization solutions.
- Attends VPM Finance and Audit Committee, and VPM and Foundation’s Board of Director’s meetings.
Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
- CPA / CFA designation preferred.
- Minimum 8 years of relevant progressive accounting experience required.
- Experience working with not-for-profit organizations, public broadcasting experience is a bonus.
- Demonstrated success in improving systems, streamlining operations and leading technology implementations.
- Excellent computer skills, including accounting software, and electronic spreadsheets (Microsoft Office applications), preferably experience with SAGE Intaact, Bill.com and related financial software.
