Each day, VPM sets out to educate, entertain and inspire the members of our community with robust and diverse content that is accessible to as many people as possible. It’s also important that our communities see themselves through the stories we tell. To accomplish these goals, members of the VPM staff engage with those communities to meet and collaborate with individuals and organizations that also seek to be a resource to all Virginians.
Below are some highlights of how VPM has served our communities in the last month.
On July 20, VPM and The Market at 25th hosted the first "Celebrating Fathers" event. Community members visited The Market and enjoyed early learning activities for kids, a live DJ and words of encouragement and affirmation for fathers from team members at VPM and The Market. Local fathers who attended enjoyed a meal with their families from The Market as a token of appreciation for the love and care they give their families, especially during their children's most formative early years. This event served as an introduction to a broader initiative to show appreciation for fathers in early learning, especially in our east end community.
On July 31, VPM released a trailer for The Sounds of Culture: 20 years of the Richmond Folk Festival. A documentary from VPM, Venture Richmond and the Richmond Folk Festival, The Sounds of Culture looks back at the festival’s roots and how it shaped the event that is so well attended and fondly regarded today. The Sounds of Culture: 20 years of the Richmond Folk Festival premieres on Tuesday, September 17, at 8:00 p.m. and can be seen on VPM PBS Richmond, VPM PBS Charlottesville, VPM PBS Harrisonburg and livestreamed on the PBS app. The 2024 Richmond Folk Festival will take place from September 27-29.
VPM continues to strive toward connecting with the members of our community to create a more informed and empathetic Commonwealth. If you have any questions about VPM’s work in the community, please contact Mary Arritt, VPM’s Community Engagement Manager.
