Stories by the James: Sophie Smith

Sophie Smith was introduced to the James River at a young age and ultimately fell in love with the waterway’s relaxing atmosphere and scenery. Later as a young adult, Sophie discovered another love - printmaking and painting.

As Sophie developed as an artist, she found the James popping up again and again in her work as her muse and inspiration. She takes us inside her artistic process, explains how her river prints allow her to share her love of the river with others, and urges us all to treat the James as our home.

Listen to Stories by the James, Fridays at 6:44 a.m. and 8:44 a.m. during NPR's Morning Edition and at 4:44 p.m. during NPR's All Things Considered on VPM News (88.9 WCVE).
