Musical surprises and a touch of Mardi Gras

It’s another busy weekend ahead on John’s Porch and I hope you will take some time to join me as I have a number of surprises for you. As you know, there are two programs, one on Saturday and one on Sunday and each show is unique.

On Sunday we have a lot of new music and a couple of older tunes for your listening pleasure. There’s NRBQ, a group that is coming to Richmond for a concert at The Tin Pan – get your tickets early for this killer show – and Robert Gordon teaming with Link Wray for a live concert in Cleveland in 1978 and that’s just the first couple of songs!

Willie Nelson’s got a new album coming out to celebrate his 90th birthday and we’ve got a single that’s been released ahead of it.

Speaking of new things, we’ve got new work from Elvis Costello, Slaid Cleaves, and Joanne Shaw Taylor among others. There’s also new work from Van Morrison, Marc Broussard, and Kelly’s lot to close out the first half of Saturday the 18th.

The second half features more new music from Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Angela Strehli, Lex Grey, and Ruth Wyand.

On Sunday we’ll get ready for Mardi Gras with a lot of music from - or about – New Orleans. Included in this collection are songs from Dr. John, Lloyd Price, Professor Longhair, Memphis Slim, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Fats Domino, and Irma Thomas.

The Crescent City is well represented here.

And there’s still time for new music from Bonnie Raitt, The Wood Brothers, Reverend Horton Heat, sue Palmer & Her Motel Swing Orchestra, and The Wood Box Heroes.

I hope you will be able to join me this Saturday and Sunday, February 18th and 19th from 10 until noon. Please bring along your friends, as we continue to explore familiar and new artists of all stripes. We’re on VPM Music 93.1 and 107.3 and online at VPM.org.
