City of Richmond seals sewer pipe leaking into James
Reported by VPM News’ Patrick Larsen

After months of on-and-off leaks, a pipe over the James River was cut off from the sewer system and sealed Monday by the Richmond Department of Public Utilities.

The city has for years worked to address its aging combined sewer overflow infrastructure. And while Richmond was spared the worst of Debby’s rain, it still caused overflows at several outfalls, according to an online city map.

“In Richmond, we have very old infrastructure, and we're doing everything we can to ensure that that infrastructure is fortified and stays in proper working condition to deliver the cleanest water possible to all the residents, and the residents beyond the city of Richmond,” Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney previously told VPM News.

Richmond to install additional speed cameras in school zones
Reported by VPM News’ Keyris Manzanares

Richmond Public Schools Chief Wellness Officer Renesha Parks said the division is excited to see the program’s expansion from the pilot program, which counted two cameras. By the time school begins, 11 cameras are expected to be functioning across the city.

“Many of our schools are located in high-trafficked roads, and cars flying down these streets present a huge safety danger for students and families," Parks wrote in a statement to VPM News. “The cameras in the pilots last year led to a big drop in unsafe driving around schools, and we believe the expansion will too.”

The cameras are in line with objectives of the city’s Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to improve the safety of people who walk, roll and bike around Richmond.
