Watch: Remembering War Hero Russell Scott

WWII hero Russell Scott

At VPM, we are saddened to hear about the passing of 99 year old, Russell Scott, a WWII  hero, Purple Heart recipient, ex-POW and volunteer at the VA Hospital and Virginia War Memorial. It is our honor to re-share a special Virginia Currents story featuring Russell Scott that first-aired on November 12, 2015.

In WWII, Russell was a Tail Gunner on the B-25 bomber, "Wabbit Twacks." His plane was shot down over Italy on May 25, 1944. With a broken back, he was captured and held as a Prisoner of War in Germany until his release a year later.

To honor his harrowing experience, the Virginia War Memorial hung a 9 foot replica of Russell's B-25. Perched on the plane's tail section is a 3-D printed representation of Russell, created by the Virtual Curation Laboratory at VCU.

Russell recounts fascinating stories of his imprisonment at Stalag Luft 1. Film clips of this POW camp are included in this story.
