We’re in a new normal - not one we expected and certainly not one we expected to last this long. However, RVA is resilient and our creative community has found new ways to explore this new world. The first VIRTUAL Richmond Folk Festival is just an example of how our arts & culture community has taken music, theatre, visual art, and cultural experience to another level. This week, make a point to get out and support the arts and enjoy the rich and vibrant landscape that RVA continues to offers.
1. 2020 VIRTUAL RICHMOND FOLK FESTIVAL

The Richmond Folk Festival will celebrate its 16th anniversary the weekend of October 9-11 with a “virtual” event that will bring together the community through a special television program, radio broadcasts and online streaming. The show will go on—a virtual event celebrating the roots, richness, and variety of American culture. See schedule and how to watch and listen HERE.
2. FALL FAN ART STROLL

3. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: WHAT THE 19TH AMENDMENT DIDN'T DO

Moderated by Virginia State Senator Jennifer McClellan, this virtual panel discussion presented by the Library of Virginia explores the struggle for the vote that remained for many citizens after the passage of the 19th Amendment. Historians Lauranett Lee and Megan Taylor-Shockley discuss the fundamental question of citizenship through obstacles that limited suffrage to some Americans, including the Equal Rights Amendment, extending citizenship to America’s indigenous peoples, eliminating the poll tax and literacy tests, and the continuing advocacy for restoration of rights to felons. 4. HARRIET TUBMAN AND THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

Share the joys, sorrows, and challenges Harriet Tubman faced while courageously freeing herself and hundreds of others from the bonds of slavery. As Harriet and her friend, Sarah Bradford, narrate her adventurous life, we get a closer look at this brave woman whose determination changed the world. Perfect for kids! Presented by Virginia Repertory Theatre, This production will be socially distanced. Face masks are mandatory for staff and audience members (ages 2 and up) while inside the theatre.

6. FROM SHAKESPEARE TO SHANGE: RECLAIMING OUR RACIAL AND CULTURAL IDENTITY WITHIN THE STUDY OF PERFORMANCE AND ARTS EDUCATION

A part of the VCU Faculty Lecture Series, this lecture draws from VCU professor Dr. Tawnya Pettiford-Wates’ personal experiences, and includes an overview of the specific methodology she developed over the years to facilitate the journey towards self-actualization and self-determination for the creative and performing artist. She plans to include a brief demo and question answer with a few students who have had some experience with the methodology and the process. This event is free but registration is required.

The Highpoint has extended Murmations, ceramic works by Isabelle Coppinger; and What We May Be, mixed media works by Mona Dworkin, if you missed them before they closed for the pandemic - now's your chance! 8. SUNDAY FUNDAYS FOR THE KIDS WITH CHRIS CAMPBELL

This week, enjoy music and ventriloquism fun from Chris Campbell and his puppet friends! Following the performance, Chris will lead us all in making sock puppets! Social distancing is required.
