Each day, VPM sets out to educate, entertain and inspire the members of our community with robust and diverse content that is accessible to as many people as possible. It’s also important that our communities see themselves through the stories we tell. To accomplish these goals, members of the VPM staff engage with those communities to meet and collaborate with individuals and organizations that also seek to be a resource to all Virginians.
Below are some highlights of how VPM has served our communities in August.
Events
On Aug. 8, VPM and community members gathered at 15 E. Broad St, the location of VPM’s future headquarters in Historic Monroe Ward to celebrate the start of construction in a less traditional way: with a block party.
VPM multimedia reporter Keyris Manzanares interviewed author Abby Jimenez for a PBS Books and Library of Congress National Book Festival Author Talk. Manzanares’ conversation with Jimenez to discuss her latest book, Just for Summer, was part of the 2024 Library of Congress National Book Festival, where Jimenez is one of the featured authors.
On Aug. 22, Style Weekly hosted “Best Fest” to celebrate the winners of the annual “Best of Richmond” issue from earlier in the summer. Learn more about the event and some of the attendees in this article from Style.
Speaking Engagements
On Aug. 13, VPM President & CEO Jayme Swain joined the Randy Wilson Podcast to talk about VPM, breaking ground on the new building and our place in the community. Listen on Apple and Spotify or watch on YouTube.
Two weeks later, on Aug. 27, Jayme delivered a speech about the current news landscape and how to combat misinformation to audience members at the Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville.
VPM continues to strive toward connecting with the members of our community to create a more informed and empathetic Commonwealth. If you have any questions about VPM’s work in the community, please contact Mary Arritt, VPM’s Community Engagement Manager.
