Science Matters

  • Educators of young children are invited to enjoy a four-day conference called “Natural Connections: Interdisciplinary Strategies for Teaching and Learning.” This collaborative experience, held at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, provides valuable professional development opportunities for infant/toddler through 6th grade teachers, administrators and pre-service teachers.

  • The science community has been talking a lot about Katherine Johnson for the last few weeks. Here in Virginia, the news of her passing is even more hard hitting. After a career in advancing space exploration and being an inspiring civil rights figure we simply must take a moment to celebrate the life of this amazing woman and her contributions to humanity. How did Katherine Johnson impact science?
  • Trendy diets come and go a lot so we figured we would take a moment to look at the keto diet through the lens of science. First of all, our planet has about 650 million people who are clinically obese. This disease puts people at risk of developing diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease among other scary life changes. So, no wonder people are trying to address these issues by means of dieting.
  • Henrico County Public Library’s “All Henrico Reads” program is featuring a book that explores the tension between technology and craft in today’s America. As our day-to-day lives become increasingly driven by technology, our reverence for the hand-made and the artisanal seems to grow deeper. The rise of smartphones, Google, and Amazon coincided with the rise of craft beer, the fetishization of farmer’s markets, and a greater veneration of home cooking. Is it nostalgia, or is it something deeper? What does this say about our values?
  • Just over sixty years ago, the structure of DNA was first described by scientists. Since then our understanding of the “code of life” has exploded and the genetic revolution is still picking up speed.
  • Did you get your beauty sleep last night? Yes, I’m talking about that old wive’s tale about getting enough sleep and staying beautiful. While beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder, a recent study kind of backs up some of the physical benefits associated with regularly getting a good night’s sleep. Is beauty sleep real?
  • Since Valentine’s day is often considered a hot and steamy holiday, we figured we’d dig into the hottest overlap in science these days: Dating and Climate Change. No really, Is climate change impacting dating?
  • Fans of robotics—and fans of spirited competition— won’t want to miss the FIRST Tech Challenge Virginia Championship on Saturday, February 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Atlee High School.
  • We love to celebrate new animal discoveries. Every year smart and dedicated people from around the world learn about more things that share this planet with us.
