The Richmond Public Library’s Main Branch offers three new exhibits for First Fridays RVA: The Archies collection from seven Richmond artists bonded by their love of plein air painting; Flower Fantasy featuring dreamy and iridescent acrylics by Richmond-based Ukrainian-American artist Olga Rokhmanyuk; and Music for the Eyes with works from the F-22 photography group. Paper Jewels is a collection of work from three shows that took place during the COVID pandemic. While staying with her parents before the official lock down, Julia was "cleaning house" and treasure hunting through her family photo albums and dusty book collections. She started collaging, using whatever she had at hand - pages out of books, old crayons and colored pencils and paper pieces including old letters and sketchbooks. This became the show, Peace & Love, which conveyed peace through a dove and a nod to Matisse using paper cut outs. Next came Good Juju which explored Julia’s long haul COVID symptoms of loss of smell and taste. Here she explored how to imagine a palette that could replace her palate and a collection of colors that would be fragrant. And finally, out of this thought process, Paper Jewels evolved, one with a much brighter outlook, lifting the darkness and letting the light in. Showing at the Weinsten JCC. Once again, Woodland Heights Civic Association is sponsoring its 3rd annual Makers Day Arts and Crafts Show. The show this year is a benefit for the Church’s Community Food Closet which provides food free of charge to people in need. There will be 40+ local vendors selling unique, handcrafted artifacts, a raffle, children’s crafts and food for purchase from Brekkie Belgian Waffle and Happy Arepas. The Magic of Horror is a festival for independent films and art in the genre that orchestrates your nightmares. Official Selection films and trailers will be screening throughout the day with Q&A sessions with the attending filmmakers. There are also special interest blocks that include music videos, horror artwork, screenwriters, and the top films in our “Give Us Your Worst” film contest. The Big Awards Show takes place at the very end of the two-day event when judges reveal the winners of this year’s jury awards and hand out the skeleton trophies. Presented by Firehouse Theatre.
