Stories by the James

Central Virginia is connected by the James, a water source that gives life, provides connection, and is the backdrop to so much. This summer and fall (2022), VPM News presents Stories by the James, tales of what happens on and what happens in the James River.

Produced in partnership with the James River Association.

  • Sophie Smith was introduced to the James River at a young age and ultimately fell in love with the waterway’s relaxing atmosphere and scenery. Later as a young adult, Sophie discovered another love - printmaking and painting.
  • For Cooper Sallade, what began as cherished visits to the river with his father turned into a lifelong love and appreciation for the James - especially the animals and creatures who depend on it.
  • Almeta Ingram-Miller is the leader of The Legendary Ingramettes, a nationally renowned gospel group established by her mother, Maggie Ingram, more than six decades ago.
  • Throughout her prolific environmental career, Krista has witnessed many examples of how our waterways connect us. Currently working as the Director of Programming and Community Engagement at Maymont, she has also seen how we must intentionally create these connections for communities that have often been excluded in the past.
