This edition highlights a joyful homecoming for the Grammy-nominated cajun artist and historian Ann Savoy who grew up in Richmond as Ann Allen, went to Douglas Freeman and then Mary Baldwin in Staunton and returned here to teach French at St. Catherine’s. It would be on a trip with friends to an early National Folk Festival at Wolf Trap where she met the man she would marry, Marc Savoy who introduced her to the rich Acadian culture of Louisiana. She would move there with Marc, an accomplished accordion player and cajun musician in the late 70s, and become deeply involved in the culture. Ann would be part of the Savoy Doucet Band, the Magnolia Sisters and the Sleepless Knights. Her latest album on Smithsonian Folkways entitled Another Heart, came out just before this homecoming recorded at In Your Ear’s Studio A in May of 2024. Produced by beloved roots musician Dirk Powell, Another Heart is a retrospective of the music Ann grew up with during her Richmond years.
